More than 300 children and staff are now believed to have been kidnapped by gunmen from a school in central Nigeria, in what is one of the country's worst mass abductions.
The Christian Association of Nigeria stated that 303 students and 12 teachers were taken from St Mary's School in Papiri, Niger state, a figure substantially higher than initial estimates.
The group said the numbers were updated following a verification exercise.
This kidnapping is part of a recent surge in attacks by armed groups.
The revised number of those abducted now surpasses the 276 girls taken in the infamous Chibok school abduction in 2014.
According to local police, armed men stormed the school at around 02:00 local time (01:00 GMT) on Friday morning, seizing students who were staying there at the time.
A parent, Dominic Adamu, whose daughters were not taken, told the BBC, "Everybody is weak… it took everybody by surprise." Another distressed woman said her two nieces, aged six and 13, were among the kidnapped, adding tearfully, "I just want them to come home." Police said security agencies are currently combing through nearby forests in an effort to rescue the abducted students.
