Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, a prominent Republican and key ally of former President Donald Trump, has announced she will resign from Congress.
The decision follows a bitter public falling out with Trump, stemming from her persistent calls to release documents related to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and her recent critiques of some of his policies.
After Trump labeled her a "traitor" and threatened to support a primary challenger against her, Greene posted a video statement on social media announcing her departure.
In the video, she stated, "I refuse to be a 'battered wife' hoping it all goes away and gets better." Trump called her resignation "great news for the country" in an interview with ABC News.
He later elaborated on his Truth Social platform, writing, "For some reason, primarily that I refused to return her never ending barrage of phone calls, Marjorie went BAD." He concluded, "Nevertheless, I will always appreciate Marjorie, and thank her for her service to our Country!" Greene stated that her resignation from the US House of Representatives will be effective January 5, 2026.
She explained that she did not want her district to have to endure a contentious primary challenge backed by the former president, which she believed would ultimately harm the Republican Party's chances in the midterm elections.
