Ukraine's allies hold talks on White House peace plan at G20

Ukraine's allies will meet at the G20 summit in South Africa with the aim of strengthening a US-backed plan to end the war with Russia, according to UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

The gathering follows a warning from President Volodymyr Zelensky, who said Ukraine faces one of its most difficult moments due to pressure to accept the proposed terms.

Leaked details of the US plan have been widely viewed as favorable to Moscow.

On Friday, President Zelensky held separate phone calls with the leaders of the UK, France, and Germany.

Following the discussions, Sir Keir stated that Ukraine’s allies remain committed to securing a lasting peace.

Neither US President Donald Trump nor Russian President Vladimir Putin are attending the G20 meetings.

The leaked US proposal includes terms that Kyiv had previously rejected, such as ceding control of some eastern territories currently held by Ukraine.

Washington has been urging Ukraine to accept the plan and sent senior Pentagon officials to discuss the proposals earlier this week.

The prospect of the plan being adopted has caused unease among some European leaders, who see it as heavily tilted in Russia’s favor.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described the situation as a "very dangerous moment." "We all want this war to end, but how it ends matters," she told Reuters. "Russia has no legal right whatsoever to any concessions from the country it invaded.

Ultimately the terms of any agreement are for Ukraine to decide."
